How To Plan Your Writing Projects

If you’re anything like me, first of all, you’ll be weird. Second of all, you’ll be very creative and unable to stop the parade of ideas from walking all over you. As a writer, why would you want to? I welcome any idea, because I have this secret fear that one day I’ll run out of them. Common sense tells me that will never happen, but still, the horror. *shudders* *even pet dragons shudder* Everytime I have an idea, whether on characters, plot, or both, it needs some time to simmer. Somehow I know when it’s time to start writing and it might be while I’m already working on another novel. It’s rare, but it happens. It might also be that you have projects that have somehow fallen off the grid, but that you do really want to FINISH. So, how to keep track of all your ideas and projects while making sure you don’t burst into flames and metaphors.

Organise, Organise, Organise

I started a bullet journal almost half a year ago and highly recommend it for staying on track. Of what? Pretty much anything, but I also use it to monitor my progress with novels. Not just the word count or drafts, but also the synopsis and query letter. Of course, you can also use a spreadsheet, mindmap, or something digital. Personally I like writing it down and add some doodles while I’m at it.

 

Schedule, Schedule, Schedule

While you’re at it, and you can use the same form or make something new, you decide when and how long you want to work on your projects. Whether it’s brainstorming, looking up pictures for inspiration (see earlier post: Quick Tips On How To Stay An Inspired Writer), or actually typing away with your mad typing skills. Be creative with this, or not. It’s your choice. The only requirement is that it needs to be feasible.

Plan, Plan, Plan

It’s handy to make a plan for after you’ve finished your projects. I don’t just mean the query letter and synopsis, but finding beta readers (I’ll do a post on that later), as well as revisions. If you self-publish then you should also make a marketing plan, but also make a list of who you’ll approach for the final touches, and when.

To conclude, know your schedule and plan. Sticking to it is easy to manage as long as you haven’t demanded/wanted too much. Know your limits and your desires and make sure they match.
